JAMES VISITS TOARCO JAVA IN SULAWESI
TOARCO is a Japanese-Indonesian joint venture in Sulawesi operating a state-of-the-art processing mill in Pedamaran. Toarco purchases high quality lots from surrounding farmers – all grown on steep sloping mountain sides at altitudes ranging between 1300 and 1800 meters above sea level (super high altitudes particularly for Indonesia). The coffee is initially processed by the farmers themselves and is then brought to the mill and is sun-dried on patios at the mill in a quality-controlled setting, until ready for packaging and shipment.
The farmers are paid prices well above market value or fair trade minimums for superb quality coffee. Local farmers who want to sell their lots through Toarco must be certified according to strict quality control standards including proper picking and sorting of ripe cherries, as well as transporting, storage and moisture content.
